Salerno and the Christmas Lights

Salerno is the second city in Campania Regio after Naples. Many people don’t know how interesting and important is this city.

It’s famous for more than one reason. First of all here, in the past,  there was an important School of Medicine and young students from different parts of Europe used to come here to improve their medical knowledge .

Moreover, it was an industrial city till the 19th century, before becoming an ordinary city with the Unity of Italy.

Finally, it was in a strategical position when the Americans landed in Italy in 1943. From here the Americans started the liberation of Italy.

The modern city of Salerno

I already told you that till the Unity of Italy Salerno was a very important city with a School of Medicine and an industrial tradition. Nowadays it is a clean and pleasant city with a beautiful cathedral and a nice promenade where people usually have a walk taking a coffee or an ice cream.

In the last years the local administration of the city has been good and efficient. For example, Naples is considered more important than Salerno, but Salerno, in exchange, is quite and livable. A lot of new reforms have been doing in the city recently.

Lights in Salerno

Since the beginning of November till the end of February the city is full of colorful and shining lights. Especially in Christmas time there is an exciting atmosphere and the roads are very crowded. This year the lights have four different itineraries: myth, dream, time and Christmas. There are different lights representing each of this subject. Moreover there are two innovations: the Sand Nativity and the 3D video mapping, a video in 3D about the city with special effects.

That’s why in Christmas Time Salerno can be even more crowded than Naples and in the last years has become one of the most lively Italian cities. Christmas here is the longest in the world.
