Pompeii: my personal experience
When tourists come to Pompeii they usually think of a small city. When I start the tour I inform them that the city is bigger than they can think.
Moreover I’ve to inform them that Pompeii was a real city where people used to work, to buy, to sell like in a modern city.
Brothel and plaster casts
Once, when I started a tour there was a lady telling me: “ I assumed that Pompeii was like an ancient Las Vegas “. That was a mistake. It’s true that in Pompeii there were some prostitution houses, but this doesn’t mean that in Pompeii people only drunk or were corrupted. When my clients come to Pompeii usually they want to see the brothel and the plaster casts. The plaster casts are the casts of the victims of the big eruption of 79 AD. They are not real bodies, they are just plaster casts.
Once a gentleman asked me: “ Was this ancient fountain built before or after the eruption? “ “Before the eruption- I answered- like everything in Pompeii “.
Italian beauties
When tourists are interested they ask very smart questions, really they want to improve their knowledge and that is nice. Once a gentleman told me: “ you have to be proud about your history, because Italy is a place rich of history and ancient traditions”. Doing this job I’ve realized that people look at Italy like a fascinating, beautiful country and even if I explain the same things it’s the first time that tourists learn them and that is incredible.
My job is a nice job. I am lucky, because I know new people every day and I work in enchanting places. Think of that people who are forced to stay in the same office at the same desk every day. My office has a view on the sea, on the sun, gardens and nature or on the ruins of Pompeii.
