Mount Vesuvius is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. It’s a natural park.
It was growing inside a more ancient volcano, Mount Somma.
It’s still active and there are more than a million of people living around it. It’s monitored any time by the local Observatory of Mount Vesuvius.
The walk to the top
It’s possible to get close to the top by car or by bus, but the only way to reach the crater is on foot: the walk can last approximately twenty minutes. Once you are on the top, if the weather is nice, you can enjoy the stunning view of all the bay of Naples and look into the crater too.
The most important eruptions
One of the most famous eruptions of Mount Vesuvius was the one of the 79 AD that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. It was one the most powerful eruptions of the history, called Plinian Eruption. Nowadays we can admire the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum destroyed by that eruption.
The last eruption was in 1944. A strong one was in 1631, when approximately 6000 people died.
Mount Vesuvius was the place where the famous slave Spartacus found shelter too with his friends before being captured by the Romans.
Fertility of Mount Vesuvius
On the mountain there is a very large variety of animals and plants, like the famous brooms. Usually the vegetation gets destroyed after an eruption. In winter time Vesuvius is usually full of snow.
The area is very fertile too, that’s why the best wine, tomatoes and olive oil are produced and a lot of people don’t want to leave the area for this reason too.
I usually let my clients to taste the delicious products and wine of Mount Vesuvius in one of the local wineries, to make them try the best local food.
