Pompeii was destroyed by the terrible eruption of Mount Vesuvius of 79 AD and was buried by six meters (twenty feet) of ash, pomice and volcanic material. Everything was swept away and the city was badly damaged . A famous Roman writer, Pliny the younger, who was a teenager at the time of the eruption, wrote two letters to the famous historian Tacit twenty-five years after the tragedy in which he described what he saw. His uncle, Pliny the elder, lost his life in the tragedy. The two letters of Pliny the younger are the only ancient records about the famous eruption.

After the tragedy the city was over and forgotten for many centuries, but in 1748, thanks to the kings of Naples, the Bourbons, the excavations of the city started.

That’s why Pompeii was a Roman city from 80 B.C. to 79 A.D., the year of the eruption.
