The Royal Palace of Caserta was built by the most famous architect living at that time, Luigi Vanvitelli, in the middle of the eighteenth century. He tried to imitate the famous Palace of Versailles.

It was built in Caserta, faraway from Naples, in a safer position, in order to avoid enemies invasions.

The Bourbons and Caserta

It’s probably the most important building projected by the Bourbons, the kings of Naples in the 18th and the 19th centuries. The Bourbons has been the most important dynasty ruling Naples in all the times. They made all the best for the kingdom of Naples. They began the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. They initiated the Factory of San Leucio, the National Archaeological Museum and the Palace of Capodimonte too.

The Royal Palace of Caserta is the best expression of the power of the family. There are the elegant royal apartment and the spectacular gardens which are extended for 3 kilometers.

The royal apartment is divided in the old one and the new one. In the old one there are the elegant rooms where the Bourbons used to live. In the new one there is the apartment of the French king Joachim Murat.

The most famous painting is on the ceiling of the throne room. It represents  the king of Naples, Charles and the architect Luigi Vanvitelli put the first stone of the Royal Palace of Caserta. The apartment is very refined, with pretty objects and paintings.

The gardens are extended in a huge area, with falls and fountains decorated with mythological subjects. At the end of the park there is the wonderful English Garden, en enchanting area full of rare and exotic plants. This gardens are considered even more fascinating than the ones of Versailles. They represent the best part of a tour here.

The Royal Palace of Caserta is for sure the most important building left by the Bourbons.
