Tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum

foropompei

Two incredible archaeological sites

The tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum is about two very important archaeological sites. They are the only Roman cities preserved after an eruption.

Which is more interesting? A tour of Pompeii or a tour of Herculaneum? Which is more important? Let me tell you that is almost impossible to answer this question. It depends by your personal opinion, your personal taste. These two cities are both very famous and important.

Elegance of Herculaneum

A tour of Pompeii is about the queen of archaeology. A tour of Herculaneum, on the other hand, is about a city even more elegant and refined than Pompeii by some experts. In fact, in Herculaneum you can see mosaics like the one of Neptune and Amphitrite, made of glass and shells or the wonderful one of Triton in the public baths. In the city there are original remains of organic material too; especially remains of wood.

The most interesting area of the city is for sure the one of the ancient beach, with the skeletons of the victims of the big eruption.

It’s a city for experts and history lovers.

Tour of Pompeii: plaster casts and lupanare

The tour Pompeii is including the plaster casts, that are the plaster reproductions of the victims of the big eruption. It’s famous because of a large diffusion of erotic frescoes too. In Pompeii you can still visit the Lupanare, which was the biggest brothel in the city. On the other hand, the tour of Herculaneum is nice, because this city was the favorite holiday place of wealthy Roman people. Everybody knows that the area around Naples was a kind of ancient California or Florida for the Romans, just to give you an example.

Time of the tour

You need of no more than 5 hours to do a tour like this.

Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii, also because only a quarter of the city has been dug out. The other part is still under the modern buildings. That’s why this is the average time that you need for the tour. Anyway, if you love archaeology, this is the right tour for you. Even kids can be interested; of course I try to be friendly and clear when I talk with kids.

If you wants to learn history you should come here and look at these two archaeological sites. You can read a lot of books, but it’s much better looking at the ruins with your eyes. These are kind of places that you can find only in this part of Italy.

Let’s enjoy the tour of Pompeii and the tour of Herculaneum!
